Customer Reviews

Superb film - shame about the DVD quality. - By: Filmophile, 28 Apr 2008
There are plenty of customer reviews of this superb film already - wonderful acting by all the cast; great directing & a deft adaptation, though it takes liberties with Updike's novel. An absolute classic which is great fun to watch again & again.

My gripe, here, is with the print of the Warner Home Video DVD. Poor picture quality, particularlyin the first half hour, is a huge disappointment. And the sound is not that good, either. The age of the film is no excuse. I watched, the day before, an immaculate & sparkling print of the Bette Davis classic NOW VOYAGER, so if a 1940s movie can look that good, Warners should have done better with this 1987 film.

This happens time & again with a good many DVDs. Often the original film frame turns out to be cropped, to fit old fashioned television screens. Frequently, the picture quality resembles something shot on a VHS video & crudely transferred. And the annoying part of all this is that there is little on the labeling to warn one of what is on the disc.

It's time DVD manufacturers paid more attention to quality. We are bombarded with messages about how wicked it is to pirate videos, & quite right, too. But from the customer's point of view, passing off an inferior recording as a quality product is also a form of piracy.
Pfeiifer, Sarandon and Cher combine to make an explosive trio - By: Jay, 24 Jun 2007
Three renowned Americans star as the "witches", Cher, Pfeiffer & Sarandon. All perform wellin an enjoyable strange story as they all one night recap their lives & wish for them to be turned around, that's when Van Horne, played brilliantly by Nicholson (One flew over the cuckoo's nest, as good as it gets) arrivesin their home town.

The story is exaggerated & unrealistic at points but regardless it is an engaging plot. You are always wondering what is happening & why, its strange but its gripping.

It's a well thought out story with great acting from everyone involved. The pace & tension are key but also the relaxation & mystery surrounding the story make it enjoyable & ironically heart-warming.

Some of the scenes involving the witches actions seem poor & deliberately stupid.

Nicholson's character is phenomenal, a sensational character who is juxtaposed with the three witches to create a tense & interesting scenario. He is very seductive, mysterious & manipulating & therefore is simply great to watch.

I was really unsure about the ending; I personally thought it was poor, completely over exaggerated. However it did leave many questions open & therefore encourages audiences to think carefully about it which makes it an interesting ending.

There are many ideologies of sex, families, children, & a strong idea of religion encoded. Religion is a key issuein this film, the way people believein heaven & hell.

The use of story telling is also very powerful & influential to capture the character's views on life etc.

Apart from the ending & some very unrealistic scenes it is an engaging story, worth watching once but not an essential watch. The characters & setting are amazing with an acceptable storyline.
Shame... - By: NickBottem, 25 Mar 2007

You would have thought with such a great cast, it would be a good film. No such luck. I have to say that Jack Nicholson is the most vulgar & annoying men I have ever seen! I cannot stand him, & I think that is what I don't like about the film as the three lead actresses are superb. But I love the fact that the kids at the end all have co-ordinated hair colours!

Prob worth a watch but not a buy.
Unmissable!! - By: , 06 Feb 2006
I must have watched this film a hundred times & I still love it!

The cast is superb & everyone suits their parts so well, but you have to take your hat off to Jack Nicholson as "The Devil", as someone else said, he was born to play the part!!

A colourful, fun, and lighthearted film - By: Rhiannon Beattie, 06 Jun 2005
Whilst the effectsin this film are a little dated now, it is still very enjoyable & the cast (including Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer & Cher) really give a tremendous amount to the performance, including a well-fitted & well-played performance by Jack Nicholson as the devil.

This is a great film for a girly night in, I highly recommend it!!
