Scary and suspenseful - By: Willie Meikle, 23 Mar 2008
Tony Todd at his most menacing. Given its low budget, it manages to be much scarier than many glossy horror movies, & has several top quality shock scenes. You can almost smell the grime oozing from the blocks of flats, & the protagonists descent into her own personal hell is very well handled.

It succeededin spooking me so much that I gave myself a fright lookingin the mirror on the way to bed

candyman * 5 - By: Christopher Withers, 12 Feb 2008
This film easily sit's within my collection of all time favourites. Whilst at its core it might appear to be a slasher stroke horror movie, its main protagonist (candyman) & the ideas surrounding him levitate it up into greatness.
Candyman is an urban legend, a myth, a shadowy figure which terrifies the residents of a run down tenement. As the film progresses, it alludes that candyman's existence relies on the continued belief of those livingin fear in the tenement - & when this belief is shaken, he must reveal himself to the woman who caused this doubt to occur.
The cineography & musical score generate a great atmosphere, & when coupled with the philosophy surrounding candyman, it creates an engrossing story which I couldn't help but watch again & again.
This is a film I'd definitely recommend.

A WORTHY SEQUEL - By: stuart, 03 Nov 2007
Caroline McKeaver, (Donna D'Erico) an artist, is plagued by nightmares of the Candyman, (Tony Todd) her relative. A painter himself, Caroline's gallery hosts a selection of the Candyman's paintings, which she is against since it turns the paintings into a memorial for his killings. Even though Miguel Velasco, (Mark Adair-Rios) promises keep it about his work, Caroline still feels uneasy about the whole situation. As the gallery opens & the exhibition is scheduled, Caroline is forced to dispel the rumors about the Candyman. When she leaves, she begins to suspect that the Candyman did come back, & that he is targeting her. As her friends around her start dying awful deaths, Caroline finally believes that the Candyman has returned, & she teams up with an old friend (Jsu Garcia) to fight him.

The Good News: The beginning of the movie is really good. Caroline is seen lyingin bed, then she goes into the bathroom. After turning off the leaky bathtub faucet, she goes over to the mirror & checks herself. The bathtub starts to leak again, & she looks over at it. A blood drip gets her attention, & she looks at it, then notices the blood is dripping off of a hook. The hook belongs to the Candyman, who then comes after her. It's a real great opening for a movie, & it is suspenseful. The completely white room helps, since this makes the environment sterile automatically, & the red blood & silence of the scene is perfect at drawing suspense. As a matter of fact, the whole movie is great at suspense, as it is a pretty creepy story. There are tons of great scenes where the Candyman appears from out of nowhere & torments Caroline, by graphically killing someone who was already dead. A few of them gave jumps, since the Candyman appears out of nowhere to terrify her. The visions she gets are pretty spooky, & several of them do make you jump. Even several of the graphic deaths are well filmed. Despite the usual hook-into-the-back, we get a great new death: having the hook pierce through the mouth, leaving a giant bloodstain splattering on the windshield. The Candyman then appears to crawl out of the carcass & torment Carolinein the backseat. That also typifies the gorein the film: there isn't much of it, but it looks great. Plus, how can a movie be bad when it features Donna D'Ericoin her underwear, even when it opens the movie?

The Bad News: There is a real low body countin the film, as there is only five deathsin the movie. Most of them is a massacre near the end, when the Candyman appears to lay waste to a cult that believesin his spirit. There are a lot of off-camera deaths, but we only get five on-screen. This is duein part to a long second act that is mostly stalking of Caroline, & the Candyman doesn't take the opportunity to go after victims to get his point across. It seems like a mixed blessing: He appears to be more ruthless & scary just slaughtering people, yet stalking them with realistic visions makes him appear smarter. It is a great problem for a film to have. The ending does get a little too sappy, but the way the film was going, there wasn't much choice.

The Final Verdict: It has a lot of great suspense, some good deaths, & a few small jumps. This would be a great movie if it wasn't part of the Candyman legacy, but now, as it is, it isn't a bad slasher. If you can stand a death-less middle act, this is a bad bet if nothing's on or the video store has nothing new.

GO ON AND SAY HIS NAME FIVE TIMES INTO A MIRROR,I DARE YOU! - By: sean paul mccann, 19 Sep 2006
When candyman was released some 14 years ago it was with a fresh feeling as the film explored urban legend & folklore, something that wasnt part & parcel of the horror genre of the time, nowadays its standard practice but candyman helped kickstart the art.
More of a thriller than a straightforward horrorin my opinion candyman tells the tale of a woman who hears of the candyman legend & wants to explore further,i never understand why people dont run, instead walk handin hand with the demonin these films, but as the more she uncovers the more she becomes obsessed with something that people dare not mention.
Candyman is both entertaining & gory, always a winner, check this out.
Great film - a classic! - By: , 22 Jun 2005
I had seen this original before I bought it but just had to buy it. Its such a classic. Acting is good & it has a good storyline (A man who is killed by racists joins the powers of darkness to take his revenge on all mankind!). Anyone who says "Candyman" five timesin the mirror is killed. The film is a bit bloody! However this is all part of the fun. This is a must for horror fans.
