Predictable - By: Kingsley Layton, 25 Nov 2008
His skills & outcome are utterly predictable, but I'll say no more so as not to spoil it.
cutting through fairytale convention is Burton's creation - By: Stampy, 15 Nov 2008
Edward (Depp), born with scissors for hands, is brought into the local village & becomes the talk of the town.

God bless Tim Burton. Whoin their right minds would take a fairy tale & include a man with scissors for hands? Burton's sheer strangeness continues after his beautiful Beetlejuice & Batmanin this darkly colourful fantasy drama & throws the fairytale convention out of the window. Burton is an inspiration to the film industry, a man who does everything differently & there is no one else out there like him, & his finally cut creation, inspired by one of his own drawings, is a sentimental sparkin his collection, his most touching to date.

For those fairytale lovers out there don't worry. This 1990 picture follows the convention of an outsider trying to make itin a land of troubles & difference, also including a beautiful girl & a touching if slightly obvious love story.

Like many Burton films he gives us a wonderful imaginative other world.

The oppositions encoded into this drama are fantastic. From the cold hearted dark home of Edward's to the unbelievably organised & colourful suburban town below, Burton's imagination allows viewers to see two opposite worlds living next door to each other.

These settings are exquisitein establishing the characters. The similar styled houses are those tidy & sophisticated homes you expect the rich & posh to live & sure enough all the middle aged gossip loving women live next door to one another. Their tidiness & appearances create that stereotypical shallow middle aged woman that shapes the storyin so many ways.

The darkness of Edward's home is brought to life through the cold machinery. The inventor's house is a dark walled, miserable & negative creation & marks the quietness & shyness of central character Edward.

Who would believable Captain Jack Sparrow & Edward are portrayed by the same actor? You see Jack's cockiness provoking Elizabeth Swan with his quiet ruthlessness, & then you see Edward hiding his face from Kim with his Scissorhands. How Depp was never nominated for as Oscar for this performance will rage on until the end of time. Words cannot describe how he makes this character.

Good support is given by Ryder, West, hall & beautiful protagonist Joyce is created by Kathy Baker's ultimate fake charm.

Burton has waved his wand again to cast a dark & imaginative spell over the conventional fairytale & turned it into a bubbling dark & touching fantasy

9/10
One of those films you'll be thinking about for days afterwards - By: Marlyly, 28 Aug 2008
This film is odd. Think of Desperate Housewives. Think of Pinnochio. Think lame love triangle. Think tortured genious. Then mixin Johnny Depp & Tim Burton, & you've got yourself an incrediby moving film you just won't be able to get out of your head for days afterwards. I don't know enough about this film to give it full justicein a review, but I will say that I put off watching this film for many years, & probably would have for many years more had my friend not leant me the DVD, & that's a choice I highly regret. A must see film for everybody, yes it's odd, quirky + off-beat but it's humour & heart & also undeniable. Excellent.
Touching story and a classic Johnny Depp - By: M. McManus, 15 Jul 2008
This tells the touching story of Edward Scissorhands. Edward was originally a chopping machine, which an inventor used as the template for turning into a human. However, the inventor died before the final part of Edward could be made, his hands. As a result, Edward was left with his original chopping scissors instead of hands, & livedin the inventor's castle all alone. That was until a chance call by a door to door saleswoman, who took pity on Edward, & took him into town to live with her family.

Despite initially startling the townspeople, Edward quickly wins their affection. He provides free hair cuts, free hedge trimming & free dog grooming, something he is naturally suited to give, & quickly becomes a local celebrity. However, one person who does not warm to him is the boyfriend of the family daughter he lives with. The boyfriend routinely teases Edward, & resents the soft spot his girlfriend has for Edward. He also accuses Edward of causing trouble, & Edward's naivety & social clumsiness from years living alonein the castle makes him unable to counter these attacks. This leads to dramatic consquences.

The acting is extremely good. Johnny Depp was arguably made by this role, & it is impossible not to be moved by Edward's tenderness & timidness. Also, a young Winona Rider makes an appearance, as the daughter of his adopted family. The sound track is haunting, & the film has a real Tim Burton "feel" to it, especially the scenesin the inventor's castle. Fans of Nightmare Before Christmas will readily recognise this!

The film does not have any major weaknesses, although the brutish boyfriend is very dull & one dimensional & at times not very believable. The films premise is also built on a fairy tale, & some viewers may find this lack of "realism" & plausibility detracts from the film. There is some blood as well, often caused by Edward accidentally scratching himself or other people, so squeamish viewers be warned!

Allin all, the film is strongly recommended.
I LOVE THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - By: S. Schofield, 06 Jul 2008
When I first saw a trailer for this film, I thought it looked quite scary. Even so, when I found itin my local video shop, I rented it. I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is not scary at all!! In fact, it is the exact opposite.
My favourite scene of allin the film has to be the scene where Kim is dancing & Edward is creating the ice Angel.
When I saw this film, it immediately went to the top of my list of favourite films, it is that good. I still watch it & every time it makes me laugh & cry without fail.
If anyone says it is a bad film, well, they're MAD!!!!!
If you haven't seen it yet, WATCH IT!!!!!!!!
