Pretty good for a sequel - By: Cara, 21 Jun 2008
I really liked this film. Sequels can often be a real let down, but Poltergeist 2 explains why Carol Anne was chosen by the poltergeist, with a bit more insight into the family.
I found myself asking a few questions throughout the film - where was the older sister, & how did they get a real person so skeletal looking to play Kane. I looked it up & discovered that she was sadly strangled by her boyfriendin real life after the 1st film, quite shocking as I assumed it was just due to a money dispute or something similar that caused her to be absent. As for Kane, he was so skeletal looking because he was dying from stomach cancer & passed awayin the middle of filming, hence the appearance of the beast towards the end of the film.
I also discovered that Heather O Rourke (Carol Anne) died after making the 3rd film.
Given the tragedy invovledin Poltergeist 2, they have managed to make an interesting sequel.
A GOOD SEQUEL - By: stuart, 01 Nov 2007
After the destruction of the Freeling house, Tangina Barrons, (Zelda Rubinstein) & Taylor, (Will Sampson) discover the true cause of the events. He goes to visit them, Mother Diane, (JoBeth Williams) husband Steve, (Craig T. Nelson) & children Carol Anne, (Heather O'Rourke) & Robbie, (Oliver Robbins) living with their Grandmother Jess, (Geraldine Fitzgerald) & trying to piece their lives back together. Jess believes that Carol Anne has a special gift that's just like hers, which Diane refuses to accept. When Taylor finally arrives at their house, Carol Anne has accidentally released the spirits again. Reluctantly accepting his help, they put up one more fight against the spirits.
The Good News: Following up such a classic is at times very hard to do, yet this one does a pretty admirable job at being entertaining. The fact that it carries over from the first one & shows the family unit together that was so vitalin the first one. Bringing it back relates them more. There is some good moments here & there that are worthy of mention. The entire vomit creature scene is full of great moments, including the creature itself. It looks great & pretty realistic since it was an actual prop. The entire selection of propsin here are all actual rather than CGI, which makes them appear more believable than had it been done otherwise. The film does have a couple of big scenes that were pretty imaginative. The first attackin the bathroom is a great highlight, with some great special effects & an imaginative series that had a great sense of trying to be original. These all add up to a film that's far better than it should be.
The Bad News: There is one overriding problem with the film that is really hard to shake: it's 15 rating. This really shouldn't be much of a problem, but the fact is, it has to retreat on it's horror moments to make it more acceptable for the younger crowd to not get too scared at it. That severely reduces the power of the films' potential when it has to scale back the reason for it's being to make it more acceptable. That is the main problem with the film, but it's not the only one. There is a couple times where what is eventually revealed completely contradicts what happenedin part 1. The fact that it makes the family seemed destined to their fate instead of just being plagued by a random ghost attack. It really destroys the continuity of the two films. There was some slight scenes that never really felt rightin terms of the continuation of the series. The film also has a very slow start, & takes a while to get going. It's all mostly exposition to get into the film, but it could've done with some cutting out to tighten it up.
The Final Verdict: It's not that bad, but it can't do much of anything with it's rating. It can't really do a lot other than come close to delivering the scares that others with more of a chance to ;push things can do. Bare thatin mind & it can be a nice surprise, just don't expect the level of the original.
classic sequel - By: T. Charnley, 09 Jul 2007
A marvellous sequel, but to be honest, I never went for the original. I grew annoyed & tired of Speilberg frankly, & I will never forgive him for the awful E.T. And since when did a movie end with the producer's credit? Tobe Hooper must wonder surely if he should have bothered getting into the director's chair. Thankfully he had nothing to do with the sequel, & all the better for it.
Will Sampson's presence gave the film such an air of authority & it was nice to see the family trying to get their lives back together after the horrors of before. Good plot, brilliant effects & the final revelation of the other side! Super stuff. One of the great sequels.
