in my top ten films of all time....... - By: P. Ponias, 02 Nov 2008
have seen this film more than a dozen times & it never stops to amaze me.. the perfect film combination of a history lesson, action/adventure, suspence & romance, cant believe that the oscars of its year missed it.. many great characters with most given relative depth, & a daniel day-lewis perfectly casted, establishing himself after winning the oscar for my left foot & showing of what is to come from him:in the name of.., gangs of ny, the crucible, there will be blood more recently.
A superb multi-layered story, hard & bloody at times but also soft & romantic.. one of the best music scores ever on film (!), visually stunning with breathtaking picture & cinematography, one of these films that makes u think "thats what cinema is all about".. heroic, poignant the more times u watch it, the better it gets..for boys & girls (great for a date as another reviewer said) , younger & older audience not to be missed.. 6* +
Not a Classic in my opinion - By: Setzer Fan, 11 Oct 2008
After reading so many reviews praising this film, i just had to see it.
I tried three times to 'get' into this movie, but after i finally managed to sit through it till the end, i discovered it wasn't worth the effort.
Part of the problem for me is Daniel Day-Lewis. His character just doesn't regester as interesting. I've given it two stars for average because the last ten minutes were good.
It's not a bad film...just nowhere near as entertaining as 'The Patriot' or 'Braveheart', or countless other action flicks. But like i say it might be because i couldn't identify with any of the characters. I'min the minority, so if you 'enjoy' this film then great. It was very disappointing for me, even 'Dances with Wolves' held my attention more than this. 'Apocalypto' is a better film (ok different era, but worth seeing)
Amazing - By: Glenn A. Sahli, 24 Mar 2008
This is one of my all time favourite movies. Great mix of acting, action, drama, audio, and video all wrapped around a superb story.
Don't get the director's cut, the original is almost perfect.
I'm still of the belief that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The theatrical release wasn't broke.
I just found out that the original was availablein the UK & ordered it, because it is not availablein North America. Review is from Canada.
Astonishingly good - By: Brendan O. Clarke, 16 Feb 2008
Director Michael Mann (The Insider, Heat, Miami Vice) injects the entire story of The Last of the Mohicans with a sense of immediacy & scenic majesty. In the opening scene for example, he uses no dialogue for several lengthy minutes, & instead utilizes the scenery & score to draw us immediately into the story.
Based on the well-known 1826 novel by James Fenimore Cooper, this historical epic features a wide-sweeping story that encompasses a major eventin Early American history. It also takes a more intimate look at a group of characters brought together by circumstance.
Michael Mann has directed only a handful of filmsin the past decade, so his name is hardly mentioned among the ranks of premier Hollywood directors. However, each of these three films stands as one of the best films of its respective year. Last of the Mohicans also utilizes his abilities to direct believable emotional dramain almost any situation. While the love story probably happens too fast & is a bit far-fetched, he makes it feel real.
The success of this film relates directly to the immense talents of its impressive cast. Daniel Day Lewis & Madeline Stowe are impressive; Wes Studi & Russell Means are excellent.
It surprises me to hear film lovers whom I respect describe Last of the Mohicans as boring, dull, & uninteresting. I find it impossible not to be drawn into this sweeping adventure even after repeated viewings. The story told here is universal, & speaks about love, honor, & family. The action occurs at a ferocious pace through numerous well edited scenes, & the melodic score carries the story to a higher level.
Hauntingly beautiful and with a great soundtrack... - By: Alejo, 11 Oct 2007
It distorted somewhat (for the better) the original novel (which is a "classic" but quite difficult to read due to the contrived prose).
The exteriors are one of the best everin a production of adventure&action films & the cast is PERFECT.
It is a savage land which makes for a sad & cruel "natural" story, after all it is untamed territory & the characters live dangerously.
The soundtrack is a must & contribute to the atmosphere like a close fitting glove.
One of my favorite period films. The action sequences are well directed & the use of weapons seems REAL.
Highly recommended as a very good film.
