Some style, but little substance - By: Lendrick, 03 Jun 2008
Yeah it looks good & there is lots of action, but that it about it. The plot, such as it is, is wafer thin, characterisation even thinner. The actions scenes are well done. But the section at the begining were the team are fighting the uber-vampsin the sewer tunnels is very reminicemnt of Aliens, & only serves to point out how supperior that film is to this one.
Good for light watching - By: Mr. Bennett J. Dunn, 21 Feb 2008
As ever, Blade II is more about machoism than plot. The special effects also seemed a bit lame at times: you could almost see the CGin operation! However, if you watch this film with low to middling expectations, as I did, it won't be as disappointing as some critics on amazon have held it to be.
Snipes is as suave as ever, running around & hitting anything which has fangs and, to be fair, the uber-vampires were a lot more scary than the normal ones (and proper gross too!). I always find the 'serum' device a bit pointless though, because with all the huge collections of blood that the vampires harbour, Blade wouldn't be doing anything ethically unsound by nicking some, would he? Moreover, with all the vampires around, one would think he could just suck their blood & have done--'poetic justice' springs to mind...
Another amusing point is Whistler's complete invulnerability (oh, by the way, he's NOT dead: clearly what REALLY happenedin the first film is that he shot the ceiling by mistake, missing his head) because he gets kicked about so muchin this film you'd think he'd have concussion at least, but no! The man is indomitable.
Anyhow, I quite enjoyed the film; as many have suggested, it makes for very easy watching & if you like watching Snipes moving his arms & legs at bewildering speeds, this is the film for you. I don't know why people have such high expectations for an action film of this type: yes there are glaring gaps & contradictions but, really, if you look at 'Blade II' whimsically, the complete lack of sensibleness just adds to the fun.
Blood soaked fun with yoru fave vampire slayer - By: L. Williams, 04 Oct 2007
Anyfans of the first Blade will be pretty used to the gorefest/comicbook action thrillride that is the film, & Blade two only gets better.
The special effects are top notch, with Blade & co dealing with the 'reapers' - a mutated, face splittingly scary brand of new vampire, set on toppling the old vamps. The hunters turn into the hunted & it proves for a very fun film, with a good dose of black humor too. If you ever had to buy only one of the trinity of films, this is the one you want.
AN EXCELLENT SEQUEL - By: stuart, 08 Aug 2007
Blade II is a very entertaining film. To summarize the film is fairly easy as the film consists of one fight sequence after another & that is not a bad thing. Far from it because it is highly entertaining to watch Blade kick some ass but it is also the greatest flaw of Blade II, which could have been even better than the first film.
Blade is backin action & the storyline picks up a few years after the first one ended but the story is just a loose draft to provide for a lot of heavy action. The film starts off strong with Blade chasing some vampires. Blade soon accomplishes his objective & after only a few minutes of peace Blade finds himselfin the middle of some heavy action once again. It seems to me that the film makers knew that there wasn't much of a story & just decided to cover it up with a lot of action & to del Toro's credit, it nearly works. A few action sequences are marred, however, by some very lame & unbelievable CGI. The CGI is so badin fact that the film is dragged down from an otherwise deserved 7. Overall the action works though & I must admit I was entertained & after the first viewing I even preferred Blade II to the 1998 original. After re-watching it, however, I realized that a lot more attention was payed to the first film.
Wesley Snipes returnsin the sequel as the title character & he is woolly at best. His performance is pretty non-existent. Most of the act isin posing & looking cool which we knew he could do from the first film. I am not asking for a deep personal look into the character's psychology but a little depth couldn't hurt now could it? Most of his lines are hissedin the usual Blade manner & so not a lot of new has happened to the Blade character. The character of Whistler returns once againin the form of Kris Kristofferson who does what he can but as the story is pretty flat so his character is as well which is a shame because we know from the first film that Kristofferson is a talented guy. It seems that the leading ladies are all picked by their lack of talent because even though I didn't think it was possible an even worse leading lady was found for the second filmin the form of Leonor Varela. Her performance is lifeless at best & her "relationship" to Blade is embarrassingly badly written. Ron Perlman isin this film as well & some say it is his best (before his breakthroughin Hellboy) character but I disagree. While his character is the most worthwhilein the film it still isn't great. The villain played by Luke Goss is a decent villain & seems like a decent challenge to Blade (unlike the villain of Blade Trinity) & there are a few interesting showdowns between Blade & the villain. Other than this the acting is pretty standard.
The film's visual style differs from the first film & this is good because it further separates this film from the first. Blade II can stand on its own. The color palette has moved more towards earth like colors like brown(ish) & yellow which makes the film interesting to look at during the slow talking parts. The overall set work is excellent & especially the sewer set is very claustrophobic & atmospheric, kudos to the set people & the director. Here also the music should be mentioned as it is nearly as good asin the first film which had a great soundtrack. Compared to the instantly forgettable soundtrack of the third film it is like Mozart. A few changes have been made to the wardrobe as well. Blade's costume has become more streamlined & some color has been added to the his cape & this looks great. Blade is cooler than ever.
Blade II is not a deep or personal film for that matter but it is entertaining & two brainless hours of pure testosteroned action. My suggestion is that you leave your brain at the door & enjoy the action because there is plenty of it & the Blade character himself deserves a closer look. The film is not as good as the first but it is still an exhilarating ride & the comic book feel remains making Blade II a decent film.
