The Past catches up to Melanie - By: Dismal Angel, 17 May 2008
Melanie Carmichael is living the life of her dreams; her fashion line is becoming a success, she's dating a handsome politician, & she has a bright happy city life. What could possibly go wrong?

The past she ran away from to have it all is slowly catching up with her & her fiance's mother doesn't really want herin the family. The secret life Melanie left backin Pidgeon Creekin Alabama is about to make a huge impact on her life as she has to return back to finalise a divorce from her first husband - who she hasn't told anyonein her new life about.

Life hasn't really changed muchin Pidgeon Creek, but Melanie sticks out like a sore thumb with her sharp tongue, cynicism & hoity toity attitude. And to make things worse, her fiance's mother has sent out a spy after her to uncover the truth about the real Melanie - Melanie Smooter.

Reese Witherspoon plays the part brilliantly, she does a great job of making herself the enemy of the whole town, while still being able to convince the viewer she's loveable & entertaining.

Career woman's dilemma: success or happiness? - By: M. McManus, 12 Feb 2008
This film tells the story of a small town Southern girl made good. Witherspoon has left the small Alabama town she grew up in, & is now a high price fashion designerin New York City. She is also engaged to a wealthy & successful man, but feels a pang of nostalgia for her hometown. When she pays a flying visit, she instantly feels a sense of belonging here that she feels is ever elusivein New York, where she is still sneered at as a peasant from the South. She also bumps into her high school sweet heart, & faces a tough choice between her high powered fiancé & careerin New York, & her homely but somewhat more modest first love & small town. Will she have successin New York, or trade success for personal happinessin her old little town.

The film is rather sweet, but I found it a little too sickly sweetin places. The film does have a "cheesey" feelin places, a bit like a Disney film from the 1950sin places. Then again I am a guy. Female viewers may find this film very romantic & captivating, male viewers could probably take or leave it. It could be quite a good film to buy as a present for a wife or girlfriend, or a female friend, especially if she is rather career driven, as she will be able to empathise with the dilemma faced by Witherspoon.

Honest - By: Ms. H. J. Johnston, 07 Aug 2006
I love this film. I wasn't sure when I read the reviews but when I saw it I felt inspired! Reese witherspoon manages thatin most of the films, but this one had an honest feel to it. As a viewer who is addicted to romantic comedies, I can offer a fair oppinion! The lead character (for once) is not perfect... & the plot has some real twists. If you're looking for philosophy this probably isn't the best, but romance with a southern accent... look no further!
Ouch..kinda bad.... - By: LT, 28 May 2006
This movie had no story line. I found it boring. Not Witherspoons greatest.
The best romantic comedy? - By: Super_22_chick, 17 Apr 2006
I'd wanted this film for absolutaly AGES & when i finally got it i watched it right away. The first time i saw it i thought it was nothing special but then i watched it again & now i'm addicted!

Soppy? yes
Romantic? yes
Cute comedy? yes

It is perfect for a girly night with friends or on your own with nothing but a bag of popcorn for company.

Witherspoon is truly fantastic & you can't help but fallin love with Jake (and feel sorry for Bobby-Ray when she spills his best kept secret) the ending is predictable but sooooooo sweet.
