a bitter disappointment - By: K. Liebert, 17 Jan 2008
I purchased this version of Pollyanna after reading the five star recommendations on Amazon but was bitterly disappointed. The actress who plays Pollyanna was awful, she held her mouth open all the time with her tongue between her teeth - most offputting. More worryingly, she couldn't act. Many of the storylines were a complete fabrication & not at all based on the book -in particular, the romance between Nancy & Tim & the whole episode with the motor car. Nancy should have beeen about the same age as Pollanna & not 10 years older - by contrast, John Pendelton should have been around 35-40 (he had beenin love with Pollyanna's mother), not 55-60 as he appeared on the film. Aunt Polly & Dr Chiltern should have got married at Pollyanna's bedside & notin a church with Pollyanna making a grand entrance. I could barely watch the film - it was that awful.
In future I shall have to take viewers' comments with a pinch of salt!
Acutally Better Than the Original - By: vessie@oz, 05 Jun 2007
I caught this movie on TV. I was interestedin watching the remake after enjoying the Walt Disney version.
I must say that I found this version a lot more enjoyable to watch. I enjoyed this movie so much that I went on Amazon to buy a copy.
If you are looking for a movie that the whole family can watch look no further.
I am always pleased when I come across a well made production which is also clean & enjoyable.
Beautiful and moving. The BEST version!! - By: Iceni Peasant, 05 Jan 2006
Remakes are often not as good as the original, this is one of the exceptions to the rule. Where the original Hayley Mills version was a little sickly sweet this newer version is much more real feeling, quaint rather than sickly & ultimately creates a more moving tale.
Amanda Burton was an inspired choice as Aunt Polly; she's brilliant, & it's amazing to see the subtle changes she adds to her character as Pollyanna gradually gets her to break the stiff composure she normally holds.
There are several laugh-out-loud moments. And having a wonderful support cast including Pam Ferris & Kenneth Cranham just adds to the quality overall.
The mannerin which Pollyanna has her accident happensin a much more believable & poignant way than the original version. And it tiesin neatly with a sub-story between two of the other characters.
The ending is also fitting, with a nice twist.
The costumes, & atmosphere of the production are beautiful, the acting fantastic, the storytelling of the highest order; all transfered to DVDin crystal clear quality, & can be enjoyed by all the family. I challenge you not to shed a tear or two as well!
Delightful! - By: K Davies, 28 Nov 2005
This is a charming story which my Daughter has watched countless time since she received it aged 6 & is a film we have not objected to being subjected to day after day!!. Pollyanna is such a delightful character who wins everyone's heart by playing the "Glad" game. She evens manages to soften her rather stern & emotionless aunt, helping her to refind love & happiness. This film will leave you feeling happy & refreshed & has the ability to remind children & adults alike that we have a lot to be grateful forin life. It makes a welcome change from Disney!
A brilliant film for all ages - By: , 23 Apr 2003
Pollyanna is a lovely tale about a young girl who is orphaned after both her parents die. She is sent to live with her cold-hearted Aunt Polly(played by Amanda Burton) who is not as pleased to have Pollyanna living with her as Pollyanna would like her to be. She meets peoplein the village and, with the help of the 'glad-game', she manages to befriend & cheer up a whole community. After tragedy strikes Pollyannain an accident, her aunt begins to warm to her & finds out exactly how popular Pollyanna has become. There is a beautiful ending to this film & Amanda Burton provides an outstanding performancein this wonderful tale!!
