Beautiful, clever, sardonic - don't listen to the Whitehouses of this world!! - By: Adam J. Levene, 31 Dec 2008
For those of you who only know the controversy associated with Fight Club, take it from me, it's all for nothing. The people who complain about the raw depiction of white-collar violence clearly pressed the stop button less than half-way through the film. Which would be silly, because although the fighting is slightly gory, it's not the worst out there by a long way & more importantly, the fighting makes up such a miniscule part of the film's duration & message anyway. So if you've been persuaded by these people not to buy this film, ignore them. Whitehouse was satan. On the flip side, if you were actually expecting mindless bloody violence for two hours, than I strongly advise that you buy some UFC DVDs. Fight Club as I say, is more of a clever animal than you might think.
Without trying to give too much away, the plot centres around a depressed, bored insomniac white-collar worker, the representation of whom is narrated brilliantly darkly & with masses of nihilistic wit. He drifts through his dark repetative world, until he finds that support groups (where he has no right to be) offer him an addicitive thrillin other people's sadness, so much so that he can finally sleep. These scenes make for possibly the most hilarious notion ever pressed to DVD, if you share my dark sense of humour. Subsequently, having his thrill ruined by another faker sittingin the sessions, he is dragged slowly down out of his repetition into the freedom experienced by his new "acquaintance", Tyler, a soap salesman with a completely irreverent attitude to everything, particularly the inhibiting condo lifestyle of the narrator's. The nihilism of this "new" character is the best part of the film - the humour is so richly dark & mocking of our lifestyle, & highlights the unpredictability & chaos of life & the psyche.
Then comes the twist, which we won't go into. What I will say on the matter is that it's a twist that really kills you at first, but then ten minutes later makes the film even better. It's one of those twists which you can then look back through the various events of the film with & go "wow!" because you realize how neatly it fitted into the whole plot & feel of the movie. It's intelligent, psychological, provoking thought & laughter on the subjects of self, freedom & inhibition.
The whole film so fantastically balances an amazing plot, a superb representation of nihilism & fantastic psychological elements, not to mention some good (but not over-intrusive) fighting. The humour is blitzingly funny, while taking nothing away from the plot or soul of the film. The script, casting, acting, cinematography & soundtrack are all near perfect. It has artsy, twisted little detailsin set &in cinematics & is to me at least thoroughly uncritisizable.
It's little wonder that this film is regarded as a modern classic.

This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time.... - By: R. Mullaney, 16 Jun 2008
Edward Norton stars as a typical thirty-something bachelor, livingin an Ikea furnished apartment & working a job that gives him no satisfaction. Unfulfilled & unable to sleep at night he begins to attend therapy groups for terminally ill patients as he feels comfortable cryingin front of such people. On yet another business trip one evening, he meets soap salesman Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) on a plane. This chance meeting will prove to be the turning pointin this mans life & before long he is involvedin underground fighting , vandalism & urban terrorism.
Read any novel by the wonderful Chuck Palahniuk & you will marvel at his imagination. His somewhat disturbing views of the human condition make for great books (and movies) & Fight Club is no exception. It's essentially a study of the enforced emasculation of modern men but only Palahniuk could come up with such interesting characters & tell the storyin such an original way. David Fincher has turned Palahniuk's brilliant novel into a brilliant film that has become a deserved modern day classic despite a poor showing at the box office. Darkly hilarious & savagely brutal, Fight Club pulls no punches. The ever dependable Norton is wonderful as the unnamed protagonist who transforms from a softly spoken office worker into a bare chested underground fighter & anti-consumerist menace. The fight club attracts unfulfilled men from every walk of life who hang on Tyler Durden's every word as he leads them from their 9-5 existence into much darker things. Brad Pitt is on fine form as the anarchic anti-hero Durden. The film will probably resonate with men far more than women although my girlfriend loves it almost as much as I do. Many men will no doubt feel a little trappedin mortgages, careers & marriages & the idea of starting a massive gang & movingin with all your mates seems quite appealing at times. Meat Loaf is perfectly cast as a testicular cancer survivor whose huge breasts make fitting into everyday life a little awkward. Watching Meat Loaf fighting Edward Norton with a massive prosthetic rack is quite something. Jared Leto & Helena Bonham Carter also starin supporting roles. Bonham Carter is very good indded as the mysterious chain smoking Marla Singer who becomes the flyin the ointment of the boys antics.
Overall, Fight Club is a highly original, well written & finely acted black comedy drama that becomes even more genius everytime I watch it.

not nietzschean or fascist - By: T. Kennedy, 19 May 2008
people who claim the philosophy of this film is close to nietzsche's are wrong. the buildings blown up at the end of the film would have been full of the 'botched & bungled' if nietzscher had his way or at least tyler would not have bothered with any effort to make sure the lowly security guard wasn'tin the building. the film isn't about a superior few, supermen. it isn't racist as there are black peoplein it. people who don't like this film probably don't like it because of its violence, but the violence is between consenting adults, like boxing etc. they don't go around attacking people. they don't wish for a world of pain & suffering. they see pain as enlightening. tylerin the film inflicts a chemical burn on his friend so as to show the pain that was involvedin inventing soap. feminists might dislike this film also because it is masculine & condones (consenting) violence, but like i have already said, they dont just run around attacking anyone. the film is not about white middle-class men either. there are clearly working-class menin this film. please stop attacking this film as fascist! it is about the capitalist lifestyle & masculinity. it is a brilliant film. it attacks materialism, superficiality & working every hour god sends to buy the latest fashionin clothing & furniture. shallow people who are obsessed with how they look & love home makeover shows will hate this because it portrays them as shallow.
