One of The Better Elvis Films - By: E. A. Redfearn, 23 Oct 2006
I always believed that the early Elvis films were the best. He showed a raw edge & acting style which was similar to James Deanin those days. It is such a pity that his film career was ruined by making so many awful filmsin his later years, thanks to the idiotic manager of his Colonel Tom Parker who was more interestedin his mega bucks than anything else.
Here, he plays a young singer Vince Edwards who is jailed for manslaughter after getting involvedin a bar room brawl. During his monthsin prison, he learns a style of rock music from his mentor played by Mickey Shaughnessy. Upon his release, he meets by accident Peggy (Judy Tyler) who recognises his talent & sets him off onto the road to stardom. The rest, as they say, is history. Its a rather dated, but memorable look back at Elvis's early career. Includes some of his early hits such as 'Treat Me Nice'; I Wanna be Free' & of course the famous title song now recognised as one of the finest Rock & Roll songs of all time; 'Jailhouse Rock'.
Filmedin Widescreen, picture is clean & crisp with slight print damagein some scenes, although hardly noticeable. Sound is mono, but is good on a Home Cinema System which is switched to Stereo Only. Supplemented by a trailer & subtitles for the hard of hearing.
It should be added too that like James Dean who died shortlyin a car crash after completing his scenesin Giant; Judy Tyler was unfortunately to suffer the same tragic fate as Dean, herself being killedin a car crash soon after she completed her scenes. So this is a tributein her memory.
ELVIS IN HIS PRIME... - By: Henning Sebastian Jahre, 07 Feb 2006
Yes, he did make 33 films & most of them are utterly forgettable.... But a few deserves better observation, like Love Me Tender 1956, King Creole 1958, Flaming Star 1960 og Stay Away Joe 1968... AND Jailhouse Rock....
In this film Elvis Presley displays a raw edge & playes the role of the antihero quite well. I much more prefer Elvis to James Deanin that respect...
This is an MGM production & Elvis made it quite clear he was not to make a musicalin the mould of the standard MGM musical tradition. The choreography is pure rock`n roll(c how Fred Astaire embaressed the new thingin SILK STOCKINGS, made the same year at MGM)...
This is NOT a classic or a GREAT picture by any means, but it captures ELVIS PRESLEY at his prime & as a pretty good actor & THAT IS THE BEST U CAN GET:-)
An Elvis fan - By: O.V.M.Lewis, 08 Mar 2005
As this film was one of his first it was enjoyable but not as good as his music & singing which is the best. He will always remain an excellent entertainer & loved by all.
Who said that Elvis couldn't act? - By: Alan Beal, 14 Nov 2004
This is the rebel Elvis, the type of role he should have been given more of. To those who say that Elvis couldn't act, I say quit listening to those who group all Elvis films into one category, sit down & watch the man act! Elvis shows flashes of Dean, Brando & Newman as he delivers such lines as: 'That's the way the mop flops, kid'; 'Lady, I don't know what the hell you're talking about'; 'That ain't tactics honey, that's the beastin me' & 'I'm starting a new custom: no tip'. Guaranteed to make you see Elvisin a new light as a great actor. Beautiful!
Jalihouse Rock - The best Elvis film ever made! - By: , 25 Sep 2002
Before the 60's films that made Elvis a joke came Jailhouse Rock. This film will forever go downin history as his best loved movie & soundtrack. Before the world of pop video came Jailhouse Rock & no one could stop the powerful force of Elvis on or off screen! Elvis wanted to be James Dean, the teen rebel, &in this film Elvis was just that. Elvis acted greatin this film & I believe he would have become a huge film star but the army stopped that.
Jailhouse Rock is my fave Elvis film. I loved all his early films but this one stands out from the rest. The 60's films were a joke butin the 50's Elvis ruled the film world. He acted like James Dean, he became that film rebel. This film should have been released again this year but I can live with watching it on video like everyone esle.
I give this film 5/5. There is no other music film that stands out like Jailhouse Rock!
