Sad moving realistic account of the effects of war - By: Peter Wade, 20 Jul 2008

The Sunday times film review called this film Dull. I disagree with them.

It may not be a blokes film but it brought tears to my eyes. Apart from scenes of the blitz there is no war depicted.

Lily goes to Canada with her babyin hopes of making a new life on the ranch.

She is met with resistance & open hatred. In tough cockney style she wins them round & makes a life for herselfin difficult circumstances.

This film unfolds & it no doubt a much more realistic version of what most people had to put up within the war. Strange circumstances hostile reception & little hope.

Her husband comes back shell shocked & they gradually build a new life. If the film teaches you anything it is that time is a great healer.

You finish the film uplifted a full of hope that their life will turn out OKin the end after all the hardship they had to put up with.

It is all about overcoming prejudice & bearing up under the strain. I didn't actually shed a tear but I know my partner would have been using the tissues .A great performance by both Brenda Fricker & Anna Friel who held most of the film

A great little gem of a film.

A Colourful, Little Masterpiece - By: Louise Amkaer, 25 Jun 2008
With wild life of WW2 London: air raids, cigarets, & parties with servicemen including Canadian soldiers. Lily & her friend both fallin love with two Canadians & get married.

The newly wed husbands go off to war, & the British wives go to Canada to meet the in-laws. Lily's friend has married into a rich family & heartily welcomed, while Lily with her little daughter arrives at a demolition-ready farmhouse with the sour remark, that Charlie's (her husband) pay now goes to her.

"The War Bride" is about Lily's new life, living with Charlie's mother & sisterin a place where scarlett red is too bold until Charlie comes home.

"The War Bride" has a very authentic feel to it & I love the way it is toldin colours. The vibrant colours of London. The dusty neutral coulours of the farm. Peggy's (Charlie's sweetheart from before the war) pinks. Lily's scarlett red.

This was a pleasant surprise of a movie. There are strong characters, fabulous acting with Anna Friel, Molly Parker & (I forgot the actress, who plays Charlie's mother).

"The War Bride" isn't just a movie worth watching, but worth buying & seeing oncein a while.

Oh yes, I also like the way "The War Bride" as a romantic drama, does NOT go over the top. That line is so thin & luckily "The War Bride" stays on the right side.

Well worth buying - By: Shirley, 06 Jan 2008
This is excellent. It was very realistically portrayed - & managed to sensitively provide an insight into the characters, & the situations they found themselves in. Anna Friel was excellent as the lead, & was very believablein the way she adapted to the situation she found herselfin - once she went to livein the USA. The other two 'love stories' within the film were both very well done - the marriage of Anna Friel's friend to the Jewish soldier & Anna Friel's sister-in-law's 'romance'. This is well worth watching, & would recommend. It's light-hearted, but manages to tackle the seriousness of the situation.
A lovely Film - Anna Friel Shines. - By: Isabella Balkert, 17 Feb 2007
A great plot makes it more than just another war movie. There are strong portraits of young & old people caught upin war, & Anne Friel, who gives a heart breaking, & convincing portrait of a young woman, who has not had much luckin her life, but she conquers all, with her will to improve what ever circumstances she is landed in.

Go for it.

The Friel-Good Factor - By: , 11 Apr 2005
This film could easily have been a bland re-hash of the usual war time experiences, but The War Bride is a charming, warm & moving tale from start to finish.

Solid performances (as usual) from Anna Friel & Brenda Fricker provide genuine interestin the fate of the characters, & the supporting cast are all superb. Add to this a cracking orchestral score & you have one very shrewd piece of cinema.

I defy anyone not be pleasantly surprised this excellent film!
