No Blu-Ray version yet? - By: Soarhead, 17 Oct 2008
This will surely be the total catalyst for Blu-Ray players to be sold when this superb set is converted to the HD format of Blu-Ray.
Overall the movies & sound (real room shaking stuff on a decent surround sound system) even on DVD put anything else to shame.
A Timeless Classic - By: Devon Geezer, 24 Sep 2008
Not much else I can add to the heaps of adulation & praise already mentionedin other reviews - except to say this trilogy is my favourite movie....EVER! I never get tired of watching this epic (in fact each viewing seems to reveal something new) & I'm STILLin awe & wonder at the sheer scale of the production & talent that must have gone into making this abitious project come to life. It's nigh on perfect... A classicin every sense.
PS: I can only assume that the small handful of people that somehow think these movies are 'boring'(??!) must have their heads wired differently to the rest of us....!!
Fast delivery - By: Mr. D. Husband, 10 Sep 2008
Hi there,
Well, once again, I have not been disappointedin the speed of delivery. I ordered the trilogy yesterday afternoon. The delivery was here about 9.45 this morning. Now I have had an e-mail, telling me the goods have been despatched! Amazon, they've been here six hours already!!!
Very well done. Does this earn me a free delivery next time? Only joking. Excellent service.
Genuine quality, genuine bargain. - By: Sometimes gruntled, 23 Aug 2008
I am genuinely stunned by this package; to get this whole box set with 6 discs of extras for under twenty quid is just amazing. I've watched all the extra discs & they're a real insight to the making of the trilogy. Peter Jackson & his team have gone to great effort to create a special edition of LotR for DVD, not just the original release with the cuts put back in.
Be warned though, that there are spoilersin the extra discs so don't watch them first if you don't want to know what happens; they've added a whole lot more that they had to leave out of the original cinematic release.
Of course, the Blu-Ray version will be even better, but apparently it's not due anytime soon.
So get this fantastic bargain now!
Inspiring Epic of Former (or Future?) Times - By: ianrmillard, 06 Aug 2008
When first dragged by my wife to see the cinema releases of the three films, years ago, I went like a snail unwillingly but really enjoyed them. Since then, we acquired the VHS versions of the same & watched them about once annually. This extended version, however, is so much better, fleshing out some of the characters & some of the story-line.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy was once called, by a German friend of mine (who never saw it!), "poor man's Wagner" & it is true that there are elements of the "Ring of the Nibelungen"in Tolkien's epic tale (which, perhaps, was why Jewish groups apparently attacked the first of these films on release, Wagner having believed that Jews were trying to dominate the world by the money power). Some elements are obviously similar (the ring itself, the fight of good against evil, various types of entities such as men, gods, dwarves etc), but this is more than a mere copy of Richard Wagner's masterworks. It stands perfectly well alone & is magnificent throughout. Recommended, especiallyin the extended version.
