Ridley Maximus - By: JohnHoppy, 18 Dec 2008
Russell Crowe kicks Germanic tribal buttsin deepest Surrey, gets demoted & packed off to Libya to be entertaining. Meteorically becoming the world's greatest gladiator, he socks it to `emin the Colosseum, where the Emperor gets slightly peeved & asks him to leave to pick up statuettesin Hollywood. Viscerally stimulatingin its action scenes, bum-shufflingly tediousin its quieter moments, Gladiator excels visually as a Ridley film should. Scott re-invents the `sword & sandals' movie, though ultimately I might have chosen a hero other than Mr.Crowe, but I wasn't asked. The CGI Rome is a tad too neat, though. Music scribe Hans Zimmer was robbed at the Oscars, & Ollie Reed bowed out gracefully, bless him. Are we not entertained? - Actually, very much so.
Quite possibly the best film i've ever seen. - By: Film King 365, 17 Mar 2008
Good God! Russell Crow is one of my favorate actors, & I think this is his best film to date. With a superb supporting cast with the likes of Joaquin Phoenix, Oliver Reed, & Richard Harris. This is a tail of one mans quest to find the man who wronged him. Betrayed by his own emperor, the general turned slave turned gladiator must take on an empire to bring justice to his life.
Exciting, moving and hugely enjoyable. An epic film. - By: N. Thompson, 04 Feb 2008
I had been waiting for this a long time, an epic film about ancient Rome. Ridley Scotts is perhaps the greatest director alive today & as usual with a Ridley Scott film, the production is good & cinematography is excellent. Richard Harris, Oliver Reed, Joachim Pheonix & Russell Crow are excellentin their respected roles.
For me, the opening battle scene is the most enjoyable scenein this movie. It is the best scene depicting a battle from ancient times that I can remember, certainly the most realistic.
This film is exciting, moving & hugely enjoyable.
one of the greatest films of all time - By: sm, 28 Jan 2008
I've watched this twice from beginning to end & it's superb. The battle scenes are top-drawer & Russell Crowe was born to play the lead role.My only disappointment was there can't be a Gladiator 2 because i'd purchase that too.Recommended to all.
The best - By: S. Haugh, 29 Dec 2007
This is my favourite film of all time. When Maximus turns his back to the emperor & then reveals who he is is the best bit of any film ever...
You have to watch it to get the impact - awesome.
