Southern Belle's Point of View - By: Evelyn Doherty, 25 Dec 2008
I have to say, you Brits have amazingly funny shows. Unfortunately, we can't buy them here. Some of your programs are re-made American Style, with bigger budgets & flasher (i.e., lots of breast implants) actresses . Other programs just don't come out on DVD over here. I think its legal issues. We never get to see these wonderful shows, unless they are shown on BBC America, which boast, "The Best of British Television", which it is not. Last night, I watched an episode of Top Gear from two years ago!
I purchased a region free DVD player & started purchasing from the UK site. Fat Friends was one of my first purchases. I love this show. I had never heard of it, but it caught my eye. The characters are very well formed, & I immediately liked them. I could really relate to the story lines & especially the weight loss meetings, as a veteran of Weight Watchers. I love that it's funny & sometimes sad; that makes it more real. I hated the show with the bullies.
I'm glad I bought this. I'm super-glad they didn't do a U.S. version, though it would have been interesting to see the casting. Could anorexic Hollywood come up with that many "curvy" actresses?
absolutely brilliant - By: D. Hutchinson, 26 Sep 2008
i hadn't seen Fat Friends when it came out on tv, but do remember friends raving about it, i finally watched a DVD & wow, i was totally hooked after the first episode, it really got to the nitty gritty, as we slowly got to know all the personalities, with one thingin common, a weight problem, i don't know what i was expecting, but this wasn't it, it was far better than i could have imagined, & now have the complete box set of all three series, it had me both laughing & almost cryingin parts, but the better part was how they all supported each other come what may, a beautiful storyline. well worth every penny.
What a delightful series - By: Shazzarooni, 14 Sep 2008
I became aware of this series after watching Gavin & Stacey, as some of the same people arein both series, & I was hooked after the first episode. It's refreshing to see realistic characters played by actors who aren't impossibly good-looking, as seems to be the casein every US series these days. Just nice, normal, Brits complete with weight problems & anxieties. The writing was terrific & I truly believed I was looking through a little window into their world.
Great entertainment through & through.
Fantastic!!! - By: Debbie Bryant, 12 Mar 2006
I would highly reccomend this series. I was a big fan of it when it was on the teleision & enjoyed it just as much watching them all again on DVD. Its full of laughter & comedy mixed with serious life problems, that can bring you to tears.
Kay Mellor is such a talented writer & i really loved the stylein which it was written. I cant wait till the fourth series comes out on DVD.
Realistic and funny. - By: , 13 May 2005
This series made me laugh & cry, it basically follows the lives of a group of 'fat friends' through the weekly slimming club & the pub afterwards. 'Stick Insect' as the club leader is known, is a sarcastic women who aims to encourage but tends to insult the members into losing weight. She is however hiding her own secret she is very thin but is unhealthy - you need to watch it to see. The individual stories are all good, but the one that really touched me was Jamie a young lad who eats for comfort & is bullied as a result, the part where he is attackedin the park made me cry. Kay Mellor is a genius she writes the series to appeal to all of us who have ever struggled with a weight problem, but anyone can watch this & enjoy. Each episode can stand alone, but if you watch them all the characters whilst having their own story to tell interact throughout the series.
