Fuzzy Cat but Clear Ghost - By: Paul Mason, 15 Aug 2007
This review is just to update the last previous comments from 2005. I agree completely with the last reviewer's comments. The situation with the picture quality has not changed.
The Cat & Canary has a fuzzy picture definiton & muffled sound track. This is a shame for a classic of art direction, photography & design but it is still possible to enjoy the film. Ghost Breakers a lesser but good film is much better & near the norm for a black & white dvd movie from 1940.
Anyone for a Region 1 U.S. import from a different distributor?
good value . . . . . . .But - By: Roy Clarke, 07 Feb 2005
I have waited years for "the cat & the canery" to appear on dvd & when I saw it was avalible just before christmas pre booked it thinking at last i would have a pristine copy to own.Well! . . I have to say the quality of "Cat" is no better than the video copy i have owned for twenty years, the packaging is quirky at best & annoyingly difficult to open at worst (the fact the film is dated as 1932 on the back of the packaging should have forwarned me what to expect). The good news is the print of "the ghost breakers" is very good & to be fair for £15 the two films its fair value for money. So not bad value but I for one would have happily paid say £5 more & had a good transfer of "the cat". These two films are classic haunted house filmsin fact I would go as far as to say "Cat" is probally the greatest of all old house films.
