Lovingly restored pure nostalgia - By: Fletch, 19 Nov 2008
Lovingly restored pure nostalgia. These films on two discs represent all that was great about the railwaysin the UK, promotional films which give a good feel for life at the time. Lovingly restored & published by the BFI there is clarity to the films not seen possibly since they were fist shownin one case over 60 years ago. Recommended for nostalgia lovers everywhere, & a great gift for parents who long for a different age.
A vanished world - By: Christopher Vowles, 09 Nov 2007
Once you get past the slightly repellent upper middle class accents of the narrators (diphthongs now completely gone from British English), these unselfconscious short films offer a truly beautiful, elegaic look at post-war Britain. In its trains, road vehicles, street scenes, clothing, etc. the era so well photographed here is as vanished & unreachable now as the Roman Empire. The sense of the speed of changein Western society is staggering: and, of course, this was notin the minds of the producers. They, I think one can assume, were advertising a railway system & pointing to the extent to which it was a part of the fabric of all our lives. Fascinating, touching, & beautifully sad.
transport films at their best - By: R. Pearce, 25 Jun 2007
A wonderfully nostalgic look at britains railwaysin their heyday. Good quality recordings throughout. The commentaries are worth listening toin their own right. Look out , or rather listen out for such voices as Derek Guyler & MacDonald Hobley.
This is pure Britainin a time that we were proud to be english .........
Finally available on DVD - By: S. Quinn, 18 Jul 2005
A wonderful collection of some nostalgic films of British life, mostlyin the 1950s. It's not just train lovers will enjoy this but anybody who enjoys watching films of real lifein that era. It's worth it just for "Elizabethan Express" & "Snowdrift at Bleath Gill". Finally available on DVD after years of waiting this DVD contains great looking picture quality with hardly any MPEG artifacts from beautifully restored films. Obviously this has been carefully & lovingly put together.
