Achingly beautiful in every way - By: Lynette Fox, 01 Jan 2009
My favourite Gaskell novel & I was not disappointed by the bbc dramatisation. I have watched it so many many times with my two grandchildren, an 11 year old boy & a six year old girl. I did not think they could love it more than Mrs Gaskell's Wives & Daughtersin which Molly is the spitting image of their mother - yet they do. Its beautiful family viewing & how you can build upon it for children - I have used it as to teach them about the Industrial revolution, class, relationships, the Victorians etc. In Yorkshire we are constantly on the look out for places that look as if they could have been Mr Thornton's Mill!!! Their trip to Bradford Industrial Museum was far more interesting for them because of their love of this drama. I have finally given up on getting back my copy from my grandchildren & am buying another for myself!!!
Absolutely Gorgeous! - By: Foxy Brown, 29 Sep 2008
Beautiful, sensual, violent on the senses & serious. Additive, riveting & gorgeous. If you want a real period drama, this really is it. The acting is superb, the camera work beautiful & the scene when Richard Armitage stands at the window & says 'look back at me...' oh my. Viewers you are in for a real delight. A first class production. You will want to watch this allin one sitting!
The best of the best - By: Anna, 13 Sep 2008
An absolute gem of a romantic period drama - I agree with previous reviewers, this is better than even Pride & Prejuidice with Colin Firth which otherwise usually steals the show. Very beautiful & well done artistically, excellent acting & perfect adaptation which does not try to squeeze a whole book into just 2 hours but actually does it justice. I read the book after seeing this series & enjoyed it enormously, not least because it has some interesting differences which mean there are two equally good stories to follow & enjoy. Don't miss this one!
One of the best period dramas! - By: D. Stegmann, 01 May 2008
I bought this DVD a month because I couldn't watch the series when it came on TVin 2004. And I'm so happy I did it. It is one of the best period dramas I've seen so far...and I 've seen many! Casting, & production & all the team of N&S did a great job with this adaptation....so if you liked Firth's Pride & Prejudice then you'll love this one 100%!!
Absolutely Beautiful and Moving - By: H. Aabybro, 04 Apr 2008
I bought this DVD & have watched it again & again & again. It is so heartfelt & so moving, so well acted, beautiful music, it is faultless. What I loved about this, was it gave a rare insight into life of different classesin Northern Englandin the 1800's, we are given a taste of the differencesin manners & etiquette of Northerners & Southerners, & the snobbery that existed & to a degree still exists between people from the North & South of England. But for me it was how we are journeyed into the live's of the characters, who come from both the upper & working classes, seeing the very real struggles & working conditions of the working classes & what they endured. There is a beautiful & subtle development of love between the main characters, who are so contrastingin nature but are so well suited, the imagery set against an absolutely beautiful music score, means that North & South just does not leave an impression on the mind but on the very heart. Having watched many very good BBC adaptations, Pride & Prejudice, Bleak House, Cranford, Sense & Sensibility, Jane Eyre, Emma etc etc etc. I put this at number one, it just leaves such a deep impression.
