I seem to remember there was much hype over this, but I found it a bit of a boring grind, & never even watched it all the way through.
The saying 'Don't believe the hype' applies quite well here. There is much better out there for 'powerful...explicit & shocking'

no plot discription, pointless, there wasnt much of one.
sorry to say this was even worse than 'the piano teacher', dont get me wrong but huppert is a 'good' actress, but not that great.
ok, a fair idea to break a taboo subject but I was left feeling that 'one of the truely great new directors of our time' (I'll let you be the judge of that) should just come to terms with his catholicism without having to commit it to celluloid.

I was fascinated by the concept of a teenaged boy having to go & live with his mysterious, morally ambiguous mother, but the two lead actors are compelling & talented enough for this film to have been far more subtlein its exploration of her amorality. I loved the first 20 minutes or so, & then it all became a bit more tacky than it needed to be.
That said, I found it an interesting curio & I could watch Isabelle Huppert sit & do nothing.
Allin all, rather odd & could have been so much better.
So bad it's almost fun..... - By: MacNab Lives, 22 May 2008 Remember the old saying "vice is nice but incest is best" ? Notin this case it isn't. Anybody harbouring illicit desires should watch this - it will put you off the idea for life. Which is probably the only reason for recommending this movie. I could go into detail (Huppert sleepwalking through the script, what's a nice girl like Emma de Caunes doingin this dog of a movie) but I'm too busy laughing at James the King's excellent review. Go read it, he says it all.

I don't understand the previous poor reviews, this is a compelling psychological study with lots of explicit sex
thrownin for good measure.
The performances are exceptional, particularly by Garrel , better known for his role as the twin brotherin Bertolucci's "The Dreamers," & Huppert. With this film, Huppert again proves that her range is limitless & that she is one of most daring & fearless actresses workingin today's cinema.
