Having seen the show livein Manchester, to be able to watch the DVD at home means that we can remember the memories of the live event. The DVD is excellentin all respects, & the price & service from Amazon was excellent.
Celtic Tiger - Good but overshadowed by previous performances!! - By: P. Hargreaves, 04 Aug 2006
"Celtic Tiger" is an excellent performance but I feel nothing compares to the first time we saw Flatley electrify us & astound usin "RiverDance". Then Irish dancing on a large scale was novel, new, exciting & fresh. I'm still amazed by the collective synchronicity & fast footwork that sets the stage alight but dare I say Irish dancing is losing its lustre & while there is a talent there is an element of hmmm we've seen this what's new??
Unfortunatly Flatley is a victim of his own success because after "Lord of the Dance" & "Feet of Flames" can he top it? The short answer is no, & to be honest "Celtic Tiger" isn't for everybody. Sometimes DVD on TV can capture the atmosphere & essence of the live stage show but it didn't translate as well here, however, I'd have loved to have seen the performance live & the general feel is there.
If you're not into dance then it's not recommended (I remember my dad muttering, "a load of ponces prancing around" as he went to make a cup of tea). Basically there is a lot of gymnastics & ballet dancing, which isn't to everyones taste. I have to say however, the backdrops are amazing & at times awe-inspiring. The story of Ireland is told effectively & especially the emigration of the Irish to America. There is a sense of I have seen all this before & also unfortunatly the main tenet of Irish dance is all below the waist & like pogo sticks the upper body bounces up & down. This donein a variety of different costumes & scenes becomes a little tedious.
Now all the negative aside - if you like Irish dance it's worth a peruse, if you're a fan of Flatley still get it - it is a dance extravaganza & some of the settings are breathtaking. Being English I wasn't offended by the redcoats pillaging of the Irish villages - it is part of our history whether we like it or not - no point pretending the bad parts didn't happen. The music is also gorgeous & some of the songs heart-warming. Overall - it is worth a watch but it would be nice to see something original & new - a little of been here done that syndrome is creepingin now. Also with this DVD I did have a sense of well I've seen it once I wouldn't bother again so it didn't have the same impact as "Riverdance" for me.
Great entertainment - By: Mrs. J. Murphy, 27 May 2006
Celtic Tiger is almost two seperate pieces of entertainmentin one. The first half is about some of Irish history from how St Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland to the coming of the Vikings & the British & how the Irish people rallied around & eventually made their own Nation. The second half is all about the thousands of Irish people who had to leave their land & go to other landsin order to survive & its about those who went to America & the culture shock they found when they got there. They found a large land full of different cultures & razmataz. Each half of Celtic Tiger is different & very much worth watching. Of course Mr Flatley is Irish American, his parent left Ireland to start a new lifein America so this could well be a tribute to their courage. I would highly recommend this for entertainment. I know some people have been offended by the way the british were portrayed when they went into Ireland, but thats history & the truth is often painful. But if you can get past that (especially if your British) then enjoy this for pure entertainment.
Michael Flatley - Celtic Tiger - By: Janie, 27 May 2006
I was very disappointed with the choreography & found most of the dvd rather boring. I particularly didn't like the political scenes. The backgrounds were too colourful to show off the dresses to their full glamour & more thought should have gone into this. I was really looking forward to watching Celtic Tiger & to console myself put Feet of Flames on again, which I thoroughly enjoyed!!
Enjoyable - By: richwag, 13 May 2006
Although a little slow to get going & with some rather controversial setsin the first half, the show exploded into life with visually stunning sets & great dance routines. A little different from previous Flattley shows but still spectacular viewing, & the penultimate rock/tap set was brilliant.
