Fantastic !!!! - By: G. Lindop, 26 Apr 2008
For fans like me of Luke Kelly this DVD is absolutely fantastic. Kelly's voice made the Dubliner's. I only once saw himin concert & will never forget that experience. I was sad that he died so young & I would not be able to see him sing again. For years I have searched to find video of Dubliner's concerts with Luke present but without success. Now my dreams have come true! 19 splendid performances of Luke on one DVD of good audio & video quality, & allin colour. Would have paid a £100 for this.
Long overdue appreciation - By: Thomas Weigel, 05 Jun 2007
For years I had read about the Dubliners' countless TV performancesin the 70's mostly & had wanted to see them, since the first concert I attended wasin 1986, three years after Luke's last performance (in Mannheim, by the way). From everything I knew, heard & had read, Luke's stage presence was outstanding, likewise his sense of mission, much more than just the simple pub folk attitude. However, the only available Luke Kelly video was on the Dubliners Late Late Show of 1987.
Finally, we get everything we wanted: 19 complete TV appearancesin colour, interspersed with (more or less dispensable but nice comments by Barney, John Sheahan, Ronnie Drew, Phil Coulter, Mary Black, Paul Brady, Donovan & Ralph McTell). Plus some recitations of Luke-related poetry such as Louis MacNeice's "Dublin" or Luke's own "For what died the sons of Roisin" (recited by Donovan). Plus, finally, a "The Dubliners remember" section, with John telling funny stories. Once on the road at night, John Sheahan, the driver because he didn't drink, was asked by LUke, trying to keep him awake, how a priest could put Poitinin the chalice. John's answer: "Didn't you know that Jesus was a Rare Ould Mountan Jew himself"?
Thank you producers for resisting the temptation of cutting the songs (which so many other filmmakers have done, cf. Townes van Zandt "Be here to love me").
