"There can only be one" - By: Brendan O. Clarke, 03 Jan 2009
"There can only be one." And that is one too manyin my opinion. This dated movie was a major hitin 1986 for some bizarre reason. Having watched it on TV last night, it felt like a lot of hyperkinetic short movies stuck together by a director who did not know what he was doing.

Christopher Lambert stars as an immortal Scottish warrior, bornin the 16th century & preparing for his final conflictin the New York City of 1986. Lambert is a rubbish actor & there is alot of fun to be had at guessing what acccent he is about to speak in. In four different scenes he went from a French accent to an American accent & then a Scottish accent (poor) & finally a mish-mash of all three. He should have studied Connery's accent. Apparently Lambert is an American born French man, & as a child he livedin Sweden & Switerland. Great accent for a great actor. Sean Connery, as usual, turnsin a great performance as a Spanish wizard (Ramirez), even though he speaksin a heavy Scottish accent. Confused? Me too. It gets better as Lambert plays an immortal warrior & is fighting for his life !! Yes, i know what immortal is. The director was blissfully unaware.

Regarding the aggressive visual style (lots of bizarre camera angles) this doesn't make for a great movie.. add to this the temporal incoherence of the flashback-laden plotting & you've got a film that's all but incomprehensible. Lambert has a beetle brow, broken nose, & crossed eyes, & he makes for an oddball presence. Perhaps this movie is a comedy. If so, Lambert is hilarious.
Enjoyable Nonsense - By: Mr. Ross Maynard, 10 Dec 2008
I remember going to see "Highlander" when it came out (1986 ?). It was, & is, enjoyable nonsense - good sword fight scenes, with little more than pop videos & tedious paddingin between. By modern standards it is slow & overlong, & I am not really sure why it has survived so well - after all the plot makes no sense whatever. It has become a bit of a cult classic perhaps because the Kurgon is a fantasticly charismatic baddie; perhaps because of Christophe Lambert's hilariously bad Scottish accent; perhaps because there is some great sceneryin there. There can be only one, so don't bother with any of the sequels, but after more than 20 years it remains enjoyable nonsense. Who wants to live forever !
Top sci-fi - By: Chris Wood, 08 Aug 2008
This is the type of movie you can't help but enjoy. It's daft but a great spectacle, plus it has Sean Connery, good one liners & the action rocks. What more can you want?
A classic movie - By: LXIX, 31 Dec 2007
Highlander is a classic tale of an ordinary Highland warrior with superhuman powers who gets caught upin a supernatural battle spanning centuries.

The Kurgan is a great villain & Sean Connery also putsin a fine performance (ironically not as a Scotsman, but as a swashbuckling Spaniard).

Setin rural Scotland & modern day New York, Highlander is just great science fiction. Sadly, the follow ups didn't quite match the high standards of this original.

The film also has great musical moments from Queen.
Best Baddie Of All Time - By: A. E. Papworth, 19 Jul 2007
I know this film does suffer from age a little but please..... I do think that Kurgon is still one of the best & most underrated bad-guysin movie history.
The scene with the nuns is still up there as one of the best bad-guy momentsin movie history, along with the be-spectacled Nazi from Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

The film is SOOOOO worth the small sum for the great Queen tracks & for Kurgon.
