Is just like flying... - By: A. Kleopatra, 05 Oct 2008
It's one way or the other.
The movie had a really good director but a not so common plot for a Superhero movie. Oh it has a few great action scenes & a bit of blood spilling yet it's not all about saving the world or chasing a villain & that what makes it different. It has a modern element when it comes to Superman's romantic involvement as Lois Lane stands up for once & rips that dazzling smile off his face. At the same time the subtext works its magic if you know where or what to spot (Just watch the first two Superman movies) during the film. It's a movie that it worths your time (and money) but be prepared to see a whole new side of what makes Superman a man.
After almost 20 years of absence take a chance & fly with him because Superman Returns, is just like flying: you either gonna love it or hate it.

So disappointing - By: S. Ash, 26 Mar 2008
Let me start off by saying that the lead actor Brandon Routh is a surprisingly good Superman who looks hauntingly similar to Christopher Reeve. However that's where the similarities to Superman (the original) unfortunately end.
In todays age special effects are common place enough that only a good story could save this movie, & this is where the fundamental flaw is. The film picks up as though it is essentially Superman 3 (after Superman left for Kryptonin Superman 2) to return to earth to find the people have learned to live without him, much to the dismay of his ego. This is where my major criticism is. Batman Beginsin the same year of release showed that a restart works, & works well. However this film assumes you've seen the first two films, which may not be the case & it doesn't even have a quick prologue explaining who Superman is, how he got his powers & why he leftin the first place.
Anyway my greatest gripe regards the characters of Lois Lane & Lex Luthor. I'm sorry but the actors just do not do justice to the characters. Kevin Spacey is about as menacing as a Smurf & Kate Bosworth as feisty as a tele-tubby. As for the supposed plot twist they were pretty much throwing hints into your face throughout the film & frankly I don't think the character involved was necessary (sorry but to tell you would reveal the twist).
Watch it by all means as you may enjoy it, but I just watched it with the feeling this could have been much better as a restart for the new generation.
You'll believe a man can bore the pants off you - By: Bill, 14 Feb 2008
God, this is awful. Utterly, utterly tedious; a supposed action film that is slower than your average subtitled foreigh art movie. Spacey going manic lifted things for a brief second or two, but that was all. Crass & dull.
