This Aint No L A Confidential - By: G. R. Donaldson, 17 Dec 2008
Aside from Get Shorty & L A Confidential most James Ellroy novels must be very hard to film. This film looks fabulous & the stellar cast are all good particularly Hillary Swank.
The main flaw is the conclusion is pure guesswork/fantasy call it what you wish. I think thats where the films flaw lies. The DVD is excellent with lots of interesting extras. Personally I would disagree with the reviewers who have slated it so badly.Perhaps it should be listed as a brave but flawed attempt. Its still worth watching as the production values are first rate & the attention to period detail, rather good.
Beautiful but brutal, kept me glued to the screen - By: Ms. RH Watson, 15 Dec 2008
Incredibly beautiful considering the brutal core of the story - certainly not for the squeamish. This film kept us glued to the screen, I lost track of time watching it & even though the crime the story centres around was horrifc & violent the film is beautifully shot.
It is however a victim of trying to fit too much story into too little time & the buddy movie bit between the two male leads did make me cringe (Fire & Ice...! Oh dear...)
On the whole, well worth a watch - but be prepared to sit down & be involved. I can see that I will watch this film more than once & enjoy it again.

Make notes, I'll be asking questions later. - By: Charles Vasey, 07 Mar 2008
A complex who-dunnit with a good layer of Raymond Chandler hard-boiled dialogue laid on a specific erain America. You need to keep your wits about you to follow the plot which has more twists than a very twisty twisted thing. It isn't LA Confidential but it's not bad if you enjoy processing clues.
Disappointing - By: B. McDowell, 13 Jan 2008
Looking forward as I was to a repeat performance from the LA confidential school of cinema, I was astonished how bad this film was. Impenetrable dialogue, ludicrously convoluted & unbelievable plot, & a totally wasted presence of the talented Scarlett Johansen. Like some of the other reviewers, I had this on my 'must see' list for the cinema but couldn't make it - glad I didn't.
