Great Season! Awful Packaging - By: JohnBoy, 06 Oct 2008
Another Great Season for The Simpsons. Have been looking forward to this coming out for some time. Can;t believe its taken so long.
I would have given this a higher rating if it wasnt for the packaging. Unlike the other Limited Edition Simpsons boxset (i.e. Homer Head boxset etc) this comes slightly smaller where the discs are stuffed into cardboard sleeves which can be quite hard to get out, & also have to touch the readable side of the disc with your fingers leaving grubby marks.
Also the packaging is very confusing & you are lucky to find the right disc you are looking for, first time.
As long as you aren't fussy about the packaging then this is a must buy!
Trouble in paradise - By: Mr. Simon A. Macklin, 16 Aug 2008
This season, finally getting released after a year without a new box set & only the disappointing movie & increasingly unfunny episodes to sustain us, is very interesting. Along with seasons 9 & 10, 11 contains many episodes that are very funny, & a few that aren`t. All the early seasons, the classic, golden age of Simpsons seasons, have storylines & moments that are truly unforgettable, & indeed, are now embedded as part of popular culture...they were devastatingly funny too. These later seasons are funny, but for some reason they don`t really stickin the mind. I know it`s a tragic waste of memory, but I can retell most of the first 100 episodes damn near word for word. These later seasons just don`t stickin the brain. I still love them just not for the same reasons. It`s more out of feelings of nostalgia & remembrance at how happy one used to be watching them, & I now feel I shouldn`t let Homer et al. down by turning my back on them when they need me...
I`m not going to run through each episode, as some don`t deserve the effort, but there are some delights. I like "Little Big Mom", & "Missionary: Impossible". "The Mansion Family", which endsin disappointment (a theme of this season) does have one of my favourite ever Simpsons moments - when Mr Burns leaves for his health check, Monty is pondering who to leavein charge of his house.
Monty: "Who`s that fellow that always screws up & causes havoc?"
Smithers: "Homer Simpson?"
Monty: "Yes, that`s the fellow. I reckon he`s due a good run".
If you don`t enjoy that scene, you have laugh-resistant DNA. Also, Moe starring as the lead of an episode (Pygmoelian) is great news. The idea of the season finale, a behind-the-scenes style expose is a great idea (even if it doesn`t quite work).
You will find yourself ten minutesin though sometimes, & nothing funny has happened. Lazy comic ideas led to such comedy misfires as "Kill The Alligator & Run" & even worse, "Bart To The Future". I don`t know why Maud had to die either!
So, still funny, but not classics. Better than any other animated comedyin my opinion, & worth watching - you will laugh often, but these episodes are a bit like the name of Homer`s Barbershop Quartet, "The B-Sharps" - funny at first, but less so the more you become acqainted with them...
