Not enough coverage of the golf. - By: Tom, 24 Oct 2008
Having been on holiday during the Open this year & being a big fan of golf I thought this DVD would show me all the action from, as it states, a 'classic Open championship'. All the ingredients were there - the revival of the Great White Shark, an Englishman pushing for the title, a fantastic links course, the horrific British weather & the eventual back-to-back winner of the world's greatest golf championship. With years of experience producing these films they really couldn't go wrong...
Unfortunately of the 53 minutes of Open highlights included on the DVD a large portion is taken up with background information / commentary, pictures of an empty golf course and, worst of all, pointless interviews with staff who pick up the litter & make the fish & chips for the tournament! However interesting it may be to discover how many umbrellas & mobile phones go missing over the four days or how sniffer dogs can identify explosive devices (!) I really want to see highlights of the golfing action. Surely that is the point of these videos?
The first three days of the tournament were dispatchedin quick time with only very brief views of the golf. Seemingly Greg Norman was doing well & Padraig Harrington was up there with the leaders but it was difficult to tell. Obviously you cannot show all the action from four whole days of golf so I assumed that at least day four would get more detail. It does, but not much more & before you know it Greg has lost his advantage, Ian misses a putt & Padraig is the champion.
Perhaps the producers should look at some of the Masters movies which are regularly shown on ESPN Classic where the golf itself is given priority & you can work out how the title was won or lost. Sure they still have their interviews & commentaries but they take up much less of the time than this effort.
The film is put togetherin a very professional manner & the disc has a number of extra features such as the Senior Open but what I really wanted was some decent highlights from the Open itself.
A real disappointment.
