Milk - By: TheGerbilTamer, 13 Mar 2010
Apart from the Oscar buzz surrounding this film I wasn't really aware of the life & career of Harvey Milk prior to watching this film. It's an incredibly well-made biopic by indie director Gus Van Sant & Sean Penn's central performance certainly was worthy of the Oscar he won. The thing which really stood out for me was the wayin which Van Sant made the film look as though it was actually taken from the 1970s as it had a convincing grainy quality & faded colour worthy of the decade.
As well as charting Milk's rise to power & his eventual assassination it also questions the nature of prejudicein the US. It's a film which will make you think deeply about a whole range of issues. A great film, brilliantly acted by all of the cast members & well worth a watch.
Sad, moving and uplifting - By: William Cohen, 05 Mar 2010
I saw the documentary film of the story of Harvey Milk, so I was familiar with all the details. This may have taken away some of the impact. It's poignant & painful tale. Since my gripe against the Conservative Party is that they never want to recruit new members, I was impressed by Harvey's panache. He's my idea of a perfect politician, groundedin the community. Though I can see how he got caught by the dark side of it, too (broken relationships, no money, workaholism).
Sean Penn is brilliant. The best tribute you can make to true revolutionary.

Sean Penn won an oscar for his performance & it is clear to see why. The film is the very moving story of Harvey Milk the first openly gay man to be elected to public officein the USA. Sean Penn plays the part to perfection & there are times when the viewer may well find himself or herself looking for the paper towels to dry your eyes. There are 2 discs & the second disc is also very interesting as you get comments from the actors & the directors which I found very revealing.

Moving, Touching, Educating, Amazing... - By: Mr. L. Parker, 20 Feb 2010
I, shamefully, had never heard of Harvey Milk before I watched this film, & so I thank the makers for ensuring that his legacy is not forgotten.
I will not rate this movie based upon the actions of the real Harvey Milk, as those would be undeniably a 2000 out of 10 (and then some), but of the quality of the picture itself.
I LOVED this. I did not know anything of the real life gentlemen, so I had no frame of reference. I simply watched the film & it was so moving!
Sean Penn is fantastic. He plays the character well, giving him an upbeat way about him, someone who can smile & joke, but filled with a true strength, that allows him to do what he needs to do. He manages to combine humour & sentiment, & does these well. There is definite preachingin this film, from all sides, but it is well within context & understandable when it is used.
The supporting cast are brilliant, & I could find no flaw with them. They are very human, & very easy to relate to.
As the credits were rolling, I was crying. I do not cry at films, normally, but this moved me. It was typical of a film based on real lifein that it brought home many things we took for granted, but it also managed to just be a really excellent film.
5 stars well deserved.
