A nice easy going film - By: Steve Horsfall - Author (You Are Here ; Full Story Inside), 02 Sep 2010
An Education has the look & feel of a film actually madein the sixties (the decadein which it is set). It is a no frills drama with a very subtle screenplay by Nick Hornby that hooks & engages. The moral of the story is about making the right choicesin life. A young bright schoolgirl(and her mum & dad) are takenin by a charmer & the choice is seemingly instant frills & adventure or a uniform life that begins at (Oxford) university . Watch the film to see if the right choice is made!!
Perhaps an A-minus? - By: Mrs. J. ZASS-OGILVIE, 25 Aug 2010
Rather disappointing. The hype about the film, with promises of Oscars etc., led to higher expectations than I felt justified. It is perfectly competent, & the acting is excellent, but the story was conventional & predictable. Carey Mulligan is as good as they said, & Peter Sarsgaard makes a surprisingly believable English rogue. Certainly worth viewing, but a little underwhelming?
Understated humour with a little darkness: what the English do best - By: William Cohen, 06 Aug 2010
This is a charming film, romantic, serious & funny. Not substantial, but it gives an authentic slice of English life - teachers, parents & institutions. It's a bit sexy & a bit sad. I was intrigued by the deleted scenes, which showed how the story could have gonein slightly different directions. For anyone who has applied to Oxbridge, or who had pushy dysfunctional parents, you'll be at home. I liked the bit at the end when the dad delivers a cup of tea to his grieving daughter. One thing I noticed, it was only 2/3rds full. Sure to cause a family argumentin most households I thought...
how could anyone not like this film?! - By: herts coffee lover, 06 Aug 2010
The best film I have seen for ages! If you're a woman & lived through school lifein the 60's or even 70's,this must evoke some kind of memories. The father so wanting his daughter to 'get on'in life, the 'tunnel vision' of the education system at the time, & the limited expectations of both the parents & the school - no wonder Jenny went off with David!!!Watch this film, walk down memory lane & laugh!
